2019 Asia for Animals Symposium
Dalian, China - October 18-20, 2019

The 11th Asia for Animals Symposium (AFAS) will be held in Dalian, China from October 18th to 20th, 2019. AFAS is a biennial event that brings together animal protection professionals, experts, scholars, and advocates from around the world. This is the 'Olympics' of the animal protection field - a time to recognize human indebtedness to nonhuman animals; an occasion to draw support and inspiration from each other; a venue to share experience, research, and best practice; and a forum to celebrate accomplishments since the last symposium.

The theme of the 2019 Dalian AFAS is 'Using laws creatively to protect animals'. Animal cruelty should be confronted by all means. But in the final analysis it should be dealt with through laws - laws that address animal cruelty directly and laws that do not seem to be related to animal cruelty.

You are welcome to submit abstracts on legal protection of animals in all categories with an emphasis on; but not limited to;

(1) how an animal protection law or policy has been made and the lessons learned.
(2) how an animal cruelty case has been successfully prosecuted by using a law directly addressing the cruelty situation and the lessons learned.
(3) how an animal cruelty case has been successfully prosecuted by using a law that is seemingly unrelated to animal cruelty and the lessons learned from this “creative” application of non-animal related laws in animal protection litigation.
(4) how an animal cruelty case has been unsuccessfully prosecuted and the lessons learned.
(5) how cooperation among governments, NGOs, animal protection experts, media and activists have worked or can work to create conditions for law making and law enforcement in favor of animal protection.
(6) how animal activists and professionals can help prosecution of animal abusers through evidence collection and document preparation.
(7) how traditional media and social media can help bring to the attention of the general public and the authorities the legal liability of a production, a form of entertainment, a TV program, a product, and a commercial activity that can violate the state's laws regarding social morality, child development, food safety, public health, environmental protection, and social tranquility.
(8) how cruelty perpetrated by the youth and spread through social media and other electronic means can best be dealt with particularly in countries where anti-cruelty legislation is yet to be accomplished; how organized online animal cruelty acts have been successfully or unsuccessfully prosecuted and the lessons for countries that are fighting animal cruelty in the Cyberspace.
(9) how animal law education is instrumental in the long-run for fighting and preventing animal cruelty.

The deadline of abstract submission is June 15, 2019.

Abstracts must be written in English and no more than 1000 words. Please also include a brief bio with contact information. Please indicate if you are submitting your abstract for oral presentation or poster presentation or for both.
